PREPAREDNESS TO ENGINEERING PROGRAMS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS OF GRADE 12 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) STUDENTS

This descriptive-comparative study investigated the mathematics performance of the outgoing Grade 12 students of a university in Bacolod City and their preparation to tackle the mathematics of the engineering programs in college. A 30-item researcher-made questionnaire based on the subjects, pre-calculus and basic calculus was validated by three subject experts and reliability tested by Grade 12 students who were not part of the study. Stratified proportionate random sampling was used to the 137 respondents under the engineering cluster for the academic year 2019-2020. Mean, standard deviation, -test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance and Post Hoc Analysis were the statistical tools used to analyze the results. It was found out that preparedness of the students to engineering Mathematics was not at the expected level although their academic performance was very satisfactory. Results showed that students were not that prepared to the mathematics of the college engineering programs. Those students whose grades were 85 and above in their mathematics subjects during their Grade 10 were more prepared to mathematics engineering programs than those with grades below 85. Thus, it is necessary that students should really be mathematically-prepared if they want to take up engineering programs in college.

LEARNING STYLES AND ENGLISH PROFICIENCY OF ZOOMER ENGINEERING STUDENTS

The study investigated the dominant learning styles and English proficiency of Zoomer Engineering students who were selected randomly through stratified sampling. The respondents were from Electronics Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs of the first and second year levels enrolled in the third term of the Academic Year 2019-2020 from one of the universities in Northern Negros Occidental. An adopted visual, auditory, read/write and kinesthetic VARK Model standardized questionnaire and English First Standardized Education English Test EFSET free online English proficiency index which were tested reliable using Cronbach Alpha were utilized. Descriptive research was employed and the data were analyzed through a Statistical Tool Software. Chi-Square was used to find the significant difference in the dominant learning styles of the respondents and T-test was used to find the significant difference in the level of their English proficiency. Thus, the study revealed that the dominant learning style was significant to sex. The study findings also confirmed that kinesthetic and multi-styles were significant predictors of the level of English proficiency. It is therefore recommended that an intervention program on Electronics Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs be proposed to develop the English proficiency of Zoomer Engineering students.

HILIGAYNON-VISAYAN GAYS’ SPOKEN DISCOURSE: A MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Gay lingo evolved as a form of anti-languages which are usually developed by marginalized communities as a secret language to protect themselves from discrimination. For posterity reasons, the existing language of Hiligaynon-Visayan gays needs to be documented for future reference as changes in its lexicon are quite rapid. To have a better understanding of how Hiligaynon-Visayan gay lingo is formed, a structural analysis of its morphology was conducted. This study utilized a self-administered questionnaire that identified the common vocabulary of local gays. Based on the data provided by 25 purposively selected gay college students and professionals of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, it revealed that gay lingo is just an adaptation of the mainstream languages such as Hiligaynon-Visayan, English, and Filipino. Findings show that Ilonggo gays construct their lexicon through clipping with affixation, straight words with affixation, use of popular names, nativization of loan words, cancellation, connotation through images, and using loan words with corrupted denotation. In conclusion, the spoken discourse of Hiligaynon-Visayan gays of CHMSC observes no structural rules, is constantly evolving, its changes are deliberate and in tune with the times.
